SOPHIA WEBSTER

We love quirky and contemporary designs and in the spirit of #womancrushwednesday, we are dedicating our "DID YOU KNOW" post of today to footwear designer, SOPHIA WEBSTER.

Sophia Webster is a relatively new shoe designer with a pretty impressive career in fashion and has been on the rise since 2012. After school she worked with Nicholas Kirkwood for two years as his first-ever assistant.

He offered to mentor her for those two years, with the promise that he would help her launch her first collection which resulted in her been picked up by Bergdorf, Net-a-Porter, Neiman, Saks, Harvey Nichols, and so on.

The theme of her first full collection which she showed in London 2012 was "Welcome to the Dollhouse." Models posed as "dolls" in boxes, sort of like giant Barbies, complete with tons of extra shoes for accessorizing.

The shoes themselves are a riot of color and quirky design elements: Aztec prints, hearts, polka dots, flamingoes, and prints of colorful houses in Brazil.  It was on a holiday for 10 days in Rio [her shoes are also produced in Brazil] that she saw all these colors and went a bit crazy with the colors and the prints,"  She says all the prints are hand drawn and she likes to have her 'handwriting' on her work.

What's not to love about her designs....

At only 27 years old, Webster was already been named Emerging Footwear Designer of the Year in 2012 and one of the Top 100 People to Watch on The Times 2013 New Power List. Even though spring-summer 2013 marked her first official collection, it was already being stocked at retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and On Pedder (exclusively for Asia) that same year.

Her collection tests the imagination thanks to its playful, fashion-forward styles. Inspired by Brazil and artist Yayoi Kusama, the vibrant colours (think neon yellow, pastel blue and hot pink), whimsical motifs and funky materials add to their appeal. Styles range from platforms and kitten heels to flats with beaded embellishments inspired by Chinese tribal headwear. Each makes a statement, whether it's lace-ups with laser-cut flamingos and polka-dot block heels or strappy sandals featuring polka-dot appliqués and heels made of stacked beads. The pièce de résistance (which happens to be Webster's personal favourite) is a sleek ankle strap sandal depicting a Rio sunset, complete with a palm tree.

"My customer is someone who doesn't take herself too seriously, is colourful and likes to have fun with what she wears," Webster says. "She expresses her personality through her shoes."
In person, Webster seems the opposite of the woman she designs for - quiet and understated.
