ESSENTIAL SHOE CARE PRODUCTS EVERY SHOE LOVER MUST OWN

This would be the last in the series of the shoe care segment where we have shared with you everything you need to know about taking care of your shoes and making them last for you as you get the best value for your money.

We have successfully covered (or we believe so) all the different shoe fabrics from satin to patent to leather and so on (Click here to catch up). If you have any further questions tho, feel free to contact us on social media, by e-mail or call us.

To end this series, we would like to share 5 Must have shoe care products every shoe lover should have in their closet alongside those gorgeous shoes.

1. Shoe Cleaner

Shoe cleaners are essential to remove any dirt, stains, and even polish buildup from shoes. They are available in both sprays and liquids that can be applied with a cloth. Using shoe cleaner can restore the leather’s natural oils, making the leather more pliable. Never use a cleaner that has acid in it or is a household detergent. Oil based Hair shampoo can be a great substitute in the absence of a professional shoe cleaner.

2. Shoe Brush

A shoe brush is used to polish leather shoes and create shine by removing any excess shoe polish. The best brushes are made from horsehair because the bristles are soft enough not to scratch someone’s shoes but are still stiff enough to bring up a good shine. A soft brush like a pedicure brush is however better for suede and nubuck shoes.

3. Shoe Polish

There are two different kinds of shoe polish: shoe cream or paste, and wax polish. A cream or paste polish is used for keeping fine leather soft and pliable. Although a cream polish soaks into the leather, it still lets the leather breathe. Most of these pastes include mineral oil that can help maintain the shoe color, but they usually do not cover scuff as well as wax shoe polishes do. Wax polish does shine leather better than paste can, but wax polishes tend to dry out the leather. The use of polish should however be restricted, to avoid clogging the leather. People have also sworn by the inside of banana peels in its efficiency to shine leather.

4. Waterproof Product

Often shoes that are made of synthetic materials have already been waterproofed,  Creams and oils tend to be the most effective kinds of waterproofing products. The product can be rubbed into the shoe with a soft cloth and be left to stand for around an hour before the excess is wiped off. Another option is a spray compound. Never use water directly on your shoes, oils based liquids once again are a great substitute. You can even make one yourself. A part of hair shampoo in a spray bottle filled with water and a capful of coconut oil. Shake the bottle vigorously before use. Wipe shoes clean with a dry cloth and you are good to go.

5. Odor Powder or Spray

An odor powder or spray is a must have. It can be used with any type of shoe and is very useful if you are worried about foot odor. You don't want to take off your shoes in public and everyone is turning up their nose in disgust. The spray or powder can be applied to the inside sole of the shoe where most of the odor seeps into the shoe. There are also products designed to spray on one’s feet to get rid of the odor.

Remember also that the way you store your shoes matter a lot. Invest in an inbuilt shoe closet or buy an already made mobile one. This prevents your shoes from being scuffed or bent out of shape, allows for proper airing and beautifies your space.

Also, always test a small part of your shoes when trying out a new product or method to avoid damaging the shoes altogether.

If you are overweight and you want your heels (and your back/waist) to last longer, stay way from pencil heels. Don't go beyond your comfort zone all the time ( except for those exceptionally fabulous pairs....*sigh*).

We would share tips and tricks as often as we can or D.I.Y on revamping old shoes, so this series isn't exactly going extinct.
