PATENT LEATHER

Patent leather is one of the easiest shoe materials to clean and care for, but we still need to learn the basics. Patent leather is simply leather with a glossy varnished surface.

Patent leather shoes are constructed of regular leather, but a hard, high-gloss finish over the surface gives them their distinctive shiny look.

We all want the shine of our patent shoes to last forever but if not well taken care of, they can start to crease and even crack or become dull looking.

Cleaning patent shoes after wear is quite easy.

1. Wipe the shoes with a dry, lint free cloth to remove any surface dirt or debris.

2. Using soft foam and soapy water, squeeze out excess water from the foam and wipe your shoes till you cover the entire area. Foam is best used to avoid scratch marks. Window cleaner can also be

3. Pat dry with a soft, clean and dry lint free cloth.

4. Buff to shine with a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
or Castor oil or Shea Butter making sure that any excess is
    wiped off.

To remove scuff marks from your patent shoes...

1. Use a gum eraser (Tikky 20 eraser to the rescue again) to gently rub against the scuff. Be careful not to apply too much pressure.

2. Tooth paste can also be used to clean scuff marks. Apply
some on a soft clean cloth and buff  the scuffed area.

3. For more difficult stains, non-acetone nail polish remover
applied on cotton wool can be used to clean the scuffed
area (NOTE: TEST A SMALL AREA FIRST TO ENSURE
THE COLOUR DOESNT FADE OFF WITH THE
    REMOVER).

Buff back to shine using castor oil or Vaseline because nail polish remover tends to dry out patent leather giving it a
dull look.

4. For scratches that can't be cleaned, using nail polish the
same colour as your shoe will cover the scratch up nicely,
one coat is usually enough. A top coat of clear nail polish
will give it back the high gloss look.
