Throwback to the 50's...

I have always said i would have fit perfectly in this era. All my personal favourite styles were popular in the 1950's. Take away the bold patterns and fancy adornments, most shoes back then were basic, classy, single color pumps, flats, wedgies and loafers which is a lot my thing.
1950's Shoes

PUMPS
In the early years the stiletto heeled pumps were all the rage. They were very tall with 4 inch spiked ultra thin heels.
Also called Winkle Pickers.

The heels back then ended in small metal caps that left dents in soft wood floors requiring some museums and court houses to forbid stiletto shoes (Remember Christian Louboutin and the sign that inspired his designs?...read here.) The stiletto featured tall arches with a V shaped cut away from the shoe sides.

Having worn thick chunky heels through the 40's, a lot of women loved the new stilleto heels which made them feel more feminine and sexy and took them away from the masculine years, but many found them uncomfortable and accepted low but still thin kitten heels.

These were safer to walk in but equally elegant and classy. Soft leather, reptile skin, suede, velvet, mesh were very in.

The pointed toe pumps dominated the early 50's and became more and more rounded as the decade came to an end. Colours were mostly black, brown, navyblue, red and white but gold and silver were the in thing for evening wear.

SLINGBACK SANDALS
Slingback shoes in the 50s were far more sexy than the 40's. Toes were fully exposed and straps very thin. Evening sandals showed off the most naked foot skin and had the thinnest heels.

Of all the flatties brands Capezio was the cream of the top. They were luxury for those that could afford them but oh so divine. They had no heels, very low profile sides, deep cut on the toes revealing toe cleavage,

and sharp pointed toe tips. They exuded sexiness like no other!

Toe openings of the wedges were bigger in the 1950s, heels a bit taller and curved inward for a slightly more delicate look. They were and still are a style that screams “vintage” or “retro” shoes!

Slippers and Mules
Wearing stockings with sandals and mules was almost mandatory and only in extreme summer heat was there an exception. Wearing them with strapless mules made it slippery but “Spring-O-Lators" came to the rescue, it featured a leather and elastic band down the inside of the mule to push the foot forward and keep the shoe on.

Women wore sexy mules for evening wear or at home as dainty bedroom slippers with sexy lingerie to entice the Mr.
For summer wear, thin heeled mule shoes and slingback sandals were in vogue. Any extra adornment came in the form of a thin, flat bow across the toe.

 LOAFERS
The most casual shoe for girls and women were the loafers and moccasins and were a staple in most young women’s closets.

Loafers were worn by women with play-suits, shorts, capri pants and jumper dresses. Casual shoes for casual clothing was the rule.

It is no longer news that fashion these days is only revolving. The retro years laid the foundation that modern day designers are building on.

Stay in trend.
